Is Your Paint Safe?

Until recently when it came to painting, while many people took the time to consider what colors they wanted carefully, few took the time to consider what ingredients were being used in the paints that they chose.  Now however, more people are taking the time to look into what ingredients are being used, along with the effects that they can have on you, your home, and on the environment.

Did you know?

Startling Fact #1: According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), indoor air is considered to be one of the top five hazards to human health, and kills an estimated 11,400 people every year.

Startling Fact #2: Because of their chemical constituents, paints have a major impact on the air that we breathe, the water that we drink and the overall health of our planet.

Startling Fact #3: Indoor air can be up to three times more polluted than outdoor air, often due to paints and other coatings and depending on the formulation, some containing more than 300 toxic chemicals and 150 carcinogens.

Startling Fact #4: Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) found in solvent-based paints release low level toxic emissions into the air for months and sometimes years after application. They can result in headaches, flue-like symptoms, nausea, dizziness, irritation of the eyes and respiratory tract, allergic reactions and behavioral problems.  It has also been implicated long-term in illnesses such as heart, lung, kidney damage and even cancer.

Startling Fact #5: Those with weakened immune systems, young children, pregnant woman, elderly, and those with chemical sensitivities are most susceptible to VOCs.
